Archives for August 2010

our first week

August 27, 2010 By: amyswandering3 Comments

We had a great first week of school – I think we were all ready to see summer break go!

Here’s a look at what we did:

~Back to School Fun~

  • We had an I CAN’T funeral.
  • We read The Important Book and everyone wrote an Important Book page about themselves. (I will try to post them – they are really cute!)
  • The older kids filled out a This is Me! personal inventory, wrote a Bio Poem and did a handwriting analysis.
  • The younger kids made a Memory Book. (available to abcteach members)

~Science~

  • Everyone had to Draw a Scientist and see how many stereotypes they included.
  • These False Assumptions were the hit of the week! Anyone know where I can find some more?
  • The older kids did an M & M Lab while the younger just filled in a graph.
  • The older kids had fun with this Dogs & Turnips activity.
  • Lots of brainstorming went on in this Apple Observation.
  • We learned an easy way to remember the Days of Creation.

~Books~

  • Bring Me Some Apples and I’ll Make You A Pie: A story About Edna Lewis
  • There’s A Map on My Lap!

We’ll see how much fun is had next week when we are back to our full schedule HA HA!

the homeschool lunch line

August 23, 2010 By: amyswandering2 Comments

Lunchtime on school days can get a little dull around here. Too often we resort to everyone fending for themselves and that gets boring.

I am going to try assigning certain foods to certain days so that we have a good variety every week. I will cook extra with evening meals so we can use the leftovers for lunch (taco meat, for example).

This list is just a brainstorm of homeschool lunch ideas. Not listed are side options: salad, fruit, veggie sticks, yogurt, applesauce, raisins, etc.

{Monday}

  • We have a relaxed schedule on Mondays so it is a Whatever day.

{Tuesday}

  • hot dogs (Oscar Mayer Select w/no nitrates or nitrites)
  • frito pie
  • chili
  • brown rice
  • stuffed baked potatoes
  • sausage wraps
  • pizza pockets

{Wednesday}

  • spaghetti
  • chicken parmesan
  • buttered pasta w/garlic & parmesan
  • macaroni & cheese
  • fish sticks
  • popcorn chicken
  • popcorn shrimp
  • cheese ravioli (frozen)

{Thursday}

  • nachos
  • tacos
  • chicken quesadillas
  • tostadas
  • burritos
  • carnitas

{Friday}

  • subs
  • pitas
  • grilled cheese
  • make-your-own lunchables
  • BBQ sandwiches
  • PB&J
  • summer sausage, cheese & crackers
  • soup & bread

What do you serve for lunch on a busy day?

fantastic writing resources

August 17, 2010 By: amyswanderingcomment

I just stumbled across the website of the author of my favorite writing resource book. We used this book some last year, and will be using it again this year.

Take a look at Melissa Forney’s wonderful handouts! Don’t miss the Young Writer’s Survival Kit and the Writer’s Toolbox.

I am going to laminate the kit and put it on rings. I think I will do the toolbox like a lapbook. I am also going to make a Sizzling Vocabulary Ring.

I think I am going to set this all up in a writing center of some sort, along with the activities from the book. Any ideas on that?
