Earning College Credits in High School with Online CLEP Prep

May 9, 2014 By: amyswandering2 Comments

I received a free course and was compensated for my time in exchange for an honest review. I am not required to post a positive review. This post contains affiliate links.

The No Tears Way to Earn College Credit in High School

My oldest will be a Senior next year. How in the world did that happen? She is still trying to decide what she wants to do about college, and I feel like we are walking a fine line when it comes to choosing courses she enjoys. I want her to have fun with her classes next year, but still be prepared for college if that is the path she chooses. JumpCourse.com is coming to our rescue with online CLEP prep courses.

The Smarter Way to Earn College Credits

With JumpCourse.com, my daughter will be able to earn dual-credits on any of the online courses. She can CLEP out of a class if she chooses to head to college, and if not, she hasn’t wasted any time because it also counts as part of our homeschool curriculum.

In case you aren’t familiar, CLEP stands for College Level Examination Program. It is simply a test that allows a student to receive college credit for a course if mastery is shown. The test and testing center fees usually run around$120, and each course is $99. This is significantly cheaper than a college class. It really becomes a bargain when you find out that there is no textbook necessary.

Enjoyable Online CLEP Prep

JumpCourse utilizes a very enjoyable combination of learning methods. You can use all three, or just the ones that work for you. Each unit of a course has three parts:

  • Watch – A short, informative video draws the student in with an engaging speaker and lots of graphics.
  • Read – The lecture contains the same info as the video for those who learn through text, or want to reinforce what was learned on the video.
  • Practice – Interactive activities test your knowledge. You can’t move on until you have mastered a unit.

I decided to test it out by watching the video, quickly scanning through the lecture, and moving on to the activities. Unlike the intro lesson I did where I had to drag & drop some words to match definitions, this one was fill in the blank. Aack!! I was satisfied at that point that my kids will need to put forth some effort to master these units.

A student can complete as many activities as needed to show mastery. The program uses adaptive learning to tailor the review to your abilities. It becomes harder or easier depending on your skill level. You cannot unlock the next level without mastering the current one. Each course also has an online study group for students who learn best by interacting with others. An instructor is available for additional coaching.

Online Psychology Course & More

There are five courses currently available, five courses coming soon, and more in development. My daughter has started the Psychology course. She will be able to work on her own schedule without the pressure of logging on for a lecture at a specific time or stepping into a classroom of strangers.
